How To Plan A Floor Tiling Project?

Calculating floor tile requirements is the last step to take before tiling begins. But, before you even start calculating, it’s best to do a bit of planning ahead. Preparing the floor, working out your realistic budget, and understanding the timelines required are all steps that go into planning a floor tiling project before it can begin. Here are our top tips to planning for floor tiling before calculating can start:

  • Create a Budget – understanding what you can afford for a flooring project is your first step. You’ll need to create a minimum and maximum price range that you’d like to stay within based on your affordability. When working out costs later, don’t forget to account for all the supplies needed for tiling including tile adhesive and grouting.
  • Prepare The Floor – clear the area or the room as much as possible. Take out as much furniture as you can and place it safely into a spare room or storage area for the duration of the project. Remove any curtains or soft furnishings too, as the area can get pretty dusty and dirty when tiling takes place.
  • Make sure the floor is level – if you’ve removed carpeting or any other flooring that was originally on top of the base floor layer, then you need to make sure the floor is as smooth and level as possible. If it isn’t you may need to look at laying down a layer of self-levelling screed before tiling can begin.
  • Draw It Out – some people like to see the tile plan drawn out on the base layer of the floor first before beginning. This can give you an idea of what the design you’re planning might look like and it can give you a blueprint of sorts onto which you can tile.

Once all of these steps have been taken, you’re ready to learn how to calculate the tiles for flooring.

How to Measure The Floor To Know How Many Tiles Are Needed

So, it’s time to work out exactly how many tiles you need for your floor. Where to start, right? Follow these easy steps, and you won’t go wrong.

Measure the area you plan to tile

First things first, dimensions! You need to measure the dimensions of the floor you’re planning to tile in order to work the surface area of the room. First measure the length of the room (ideally in metres or centimetres) and then measure the width of the room (using the same unit of measurement). In order to get the surface area of the room, you’ll need to multiply the length by the width.

Surface Area (m2) = Length (m2) x Width (m2)

However, not every room is perfectly square, right. Here’s what to do for differently shaped rooms you might need to tile:

  • For square or rectangular areas (which most floors in the home are) follow the formula above i.e., multiply the length by the width to get the area in square metres
  • For round areas, square the radius (half of the space’s diameter) and multiply it by 3.14
  • For irregularly shaped areas, such as an L-shaped floor, view and treat the shape as two parts. Meaning split the floor into a rectangle and a square and calculate as suggested above.
